A PHOTOGRAPH
Hi, I'm
going to talk about one of the nominees for world press photo of the year named
"Akashinga, the brave ones", that won the second place in the 2019
photo contest.
The photo
was taken by Brent Stirton. He is a photographer and regular contributor to
National Geographic magazine.
The photo
shows a woman called Petronella Chigumbura, a member of the revolutionary unit
called Akashinga. This group is a ranger force rooted as an "alternative
conservation model". Akashinga received women that are coming from violent
or disadvantaged contexts, so to empowering them, this group offer jobs and
activities. Also, and not less important, Akashinga comprises helping local
people to fight to the preservation of wildlife.
This photo was taken in 2018, 20th June, in
Phundundu Wildlife Park (Zimbabwe). I can say that choose one picture was very
hard because there are many photos surprising, captivating and beautiful but
with no content, so I finally choose a picture with substance and with a nice
sense of aesthetic.
I like this photo because shows the strength
and courage of women. Also, the dark green leaves and the nature is confused
with the skin, hair and clothes of the woman, so I think that angle tried to
show the similarity of the nature with women; nature as violent, strength and unpredictable
like women.
Hello! Your interpretation of this photo is so good! I think that photography allows us to see the strength that humans possess to keep going before all the setbacks that may exist.
