BLOG 7: AN EXPERT ON YOUR FIELD
Hi, Today
I’m going to talk about Herbert Marcuse.
Herbert
Marcuse was a Jewish sociologist, philosopher, and political theorist born in
German, on 1898.
He studied in Fritburgo University, with great
authors like Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. Later, he wrote a thesis
about Hegel and the historicity, but his mentor, Heidegger, didn't approve
that. Because of the Nazi Regimen, he had to immigrate to Paris and finished
his studies at Frankfurt University. As time goes on, he became a prominent
figure in the field of Philosophy. In 1952 he started a career as a teacher of
Philosophy and Politics in the Columbia University and later in Harvard
University. When he retires, he started
to work at California University, where he won a lot of influence, at to the
point to become in the group of 3M: Marx, Mao, and Marcuse.
In 1955,
based on studies about Freud and the “Uneasiness in culture “ he wrote “Eros and Civilization”, where he
started to deploy his career as an “Freud-Marxist”. In 1965, Marcuse published “One-Unidimensional
Man”, a masterpiece in the field of Sociology, Philosophy and Political
Sciences. I love this book because I believe that resume all the ideas of the author
that I in particular share completely. This book talks about the modern
society, the capitalism, the idea of society dominated by images and
superficiality, the individualism, the art as a product of capitalism and the consumerism,
and even he referred to the decadence of Philosophy from a very critical eye.
Hello Fabiana! I don't know Marcuse. I would like that you recommend me a book to read, and thus we can speak about this
